The Banbury to London train is a direct Chiltern Railways service into Marylebone, and it runs twice an hour from 05:17 on weekdays.

Banbury to London Marylebone takes 1 hour 2 minutes on the quickest trains and 1 hour 22 minutes on the slowest. Both run, alternately, twice an hour, all day. Which one you catch matters more here than at most stations, because the gap between them is twenty minutes on a journey that is only an hour to begin with.

The operator is Chiltern Railways, and every London train from Banbury is a Chiltern train into Marylebone. There is no direct service to Paddington, Euston or any other terminus. If you need Paddington, the quickest way is a CrossCountry train to Reading and a change there, covered below.

The timetable, in the shape you actually use it

The 05:17 is the first train of the day and it is a slow one, calling at more of the Chiltern stations, so it arrives at 06:34. If your day starts at eight in London, the 06:05 and the 07:05 are the useful ones.

Later on the pattern settles into a fast train and a slow train each hour. The fast departures around ten to and twenty past the hour do the run in 1h 02m to 1h 07m; the ones just after the hour take 1h 12m to 1h 22m. On the day we checked, the quickest trains of the whole day were the 12:41 and the 17:42, both 1 hour 2 minutes.

Coming home, the last direct train from Marylebone that arrives the same evening leaves at 22:32 and gets in at 23:56. There is a later departure but it runs past midnight, so if you are out in London on a weeknight, 22:32 is the one to plan around.

Banbury to London train changes, October and November 2026

Chiltern’s planned changes calendar lists ten dates in October and ten in November. Most of them are Wembley events or work on the Aylesbury branch that a Banbury passenger never sees. These are the ones that touch the Banbury to London line, read on 5 October 2026:

What it costs

The commuter arithmetic is stark. An annual season to London Terminals is £7,572, which is around £29 a working day for a return journey that would cost £104.80 bought on the morning. Add Zones 1 to 6 and the annual rises to £8,708, a premium of £1,136 for Tube and bus travel at the London end.

If you travel occasionally rather than daily, the number to remember is the off-peak return at £55.90. It is barely more than a peak single and about half an anytime return. Off-peak validity starts with the 09:16 departure on the day we checked, so a 09:16 or later start saves roughly £49 on the round trip.

There is a cheaper weekday option too. On Tuesday 13 October, every train from the 10:41 onwards was sold with a Super Off-Peak Return at £40.00, the same price as the weekend fare below, and £15.90 less than the Off-Peak Return. The 09:16 and 09:38 still only offered the £55.90 Off-Peak Return.

Advance singles are Chiltern-only, so they are not valid on any other operator’s train. Booked a week ahead for 13 October, they started at £45.00 on the 09:16 but at £18.00 on the 09:38 and most later departures.

Banbury to London train at weekends

The weekday table above is not the weekend one, and the differences are big enough to catch people out in both directions.

Saturday starts an hour later and then runs like a weekday. The first Banbury to London train on a Saturday is the 05:38, into Marylebone at 07:00, a slow one at 1h 22m. From 07:10 the fast pattern takes over and the trains settle at 1h 05m every half hour: 07:10, 07:40, 08:10, 08:40 and 09:40 all did the run in an hour and five minutes on the Saturday we checked.

Sunday has no early train at all. Nothing leaves Banbury for Marylebone before 07:50, which is two and a half hours later than the weekday 05:17, and that first train is a slow one arriving at 09:09.

The oddity is that once Sunday gets going it produces the fastest Banbury to London train of the week. The 09:18 reached Marylebone at 10:15, 57 minutes, five minutes quicker than anything in the weekday timetable, because the Sunday service has fewer paths to work around.

Weekends are also cheaper, and not by the fare the weekday section quotes. A Super Off-Peak Return is £40.00 and a Super Off-Peak Single £39.90 on both Saturday and Sunday. That is £15.90 less than the £55.90 Off-Peak Return, and it is the ticket to ask for if you are travelling on a weekend rather than a weekday after the morning peak.

Banbury to London train: Marylebone or Paddington?

Marylebone is the only London terminus with direct trains from Banbury, but it is not the only way in. CrossCountry trains from Banbury to Reading connect with Great Western into Paddington, and on a weekday they are roughly hourly, leaving Banbury at around five to the hour.

At the morning peak the two routes tie at about 1h 21m. In the middle of the day the Reading route wins by around five minutes, and it puts you on the Elizabeth line side of London at Paddington. The walk-up fares are the same, £52.70 anytime day single and £104.80 anytime return, so pick the route by where in London you are going: the West End and Baker Street from Marylebone, Heathrow, Canary Wharf and the west from Paddington.

The Marylebone route still has the advantage on reliability: one train, no connection to miss. And Chiltern’s cheap advance singles only work on its own trains.

Where else the trains go

Banbury is a junction, and the London service is only part of what runs through it.

The Oxford service is the underrated one. Eighteen minutes for £8.70 off-peak return puts the city, the John Radcliffe and the Oxford Parkway park and ride within easy reach, and it is the connection to Great Western services for Paddington, Reading and the west.

Bicester, and why it is the faster option

If you live in the south of the district, Bicester North beats Banbury comfortably.

Those are the same trains that call at Banbury, minus the run down from north Oxfordshire. The anytime day single from Bicester North is £40.70 and the anytime return £80.60, against £52.70 and £104.80 from Banbury. Bicester also has a second station, Bicester Village, on the line to Oxford and to Marylebone via the Bicester chord.

That combination, twelve minutes quicker and £12 cheaper on a walk-up single, is part of why Bicester homes sell for £56,000 more than Banbury homes.

Getting to the station

Banbury station sits east of the town centre off Bridge Street, a ten-minute walk from Banbury Cross. Oxfordshire County Council is part way through an Access to Banbury Station scheme that extends Tramway Road to meet Station Approach Road at a new roundabout and rebuilds the pedestrian, cycle, bus and taxi routes in. Planning permission was granted on 27 October 2022, the west car park has reopened, and a new drop-off facility was programmed for spring 2026 subject to permission. Funding comes from the Housing and Growth Deal and developer contributions.
